Chamonix is one of the Iconic ski resorts of the world. It's geography and layout is a little unique though so if it helps here's a brief introduction.
Chamonix is located in the Haute Savoie region of the French Alps sitting right at the foot of Mont Blanc. The transport hub is Geneva airport, which is about 1.5 hours drive from the centre of Chamonix. There are countless transfer companies doing both private and shared transfers making Chamonix one of the most accessible ski resorts. There is also a train station Chamonix.
The Chamonix Valley is a long thin Valley containing several separate villages. The main central town of the valley is called Chamonix, but the name Chamonix is often used for the whole valley.
The whole Chamonix Valley contains a huge range of accommodation - catered chalets, self-catering chalets and ski apartments cover the whole valley. There are 5 main towns / villages but you'll find chalets dotted all over the valley not just limited to main centres. There are also hotels too, mostly in the larger centres.
Starting from the lower end you first come across Les Houches, a small village with its own ski area. It contains lots of catered and self catered chalets, along with some ski apartments (Click here for Les Houches Self Catered Chalets and Apartments)
The next main base is Chamonix town itself, which is the largest of all the settlements and is the main centre for shops, bars and restaurants. There is a huge range of accommodation including hotels, apartments and chalets. (Click here for Chamonix Self Catered Chalets and Apartments). From here you can access the Brévent Flégère Ski Area.
Argentière is the next village has you travel further up the Chamonix valley, which has a good range of self catered apartments and chalets, along with its own small centre with bars and restaurants. It's at the foot of the Grands Montets ski area, which reaches up to a lung busting 3800 m. (Click here for Argentière Self Catered Chalets and Apartments).
finally at the top of the rally you have the Le Tour ski area which has access from 2 different points - Montroc and Vallorcine, both of which boast their own small areas of accommodation including self catered chalets and apartments. Do note though if you are staying all the way up in Vallorcine then it's a fair journey down to Chamonix town itself if you are planning on sampling its nightlife.
"Chamonix Mont Blanc" is the official name of the ski area, and this covers the 4 separate areas of Les Houches, Brévent Flégère, Grands Montets and Le Tour. Although on one lift pass you cannot ski between these areas. Each area is unique and it's well worth taking the time on your ski holiday to try and get at least one day skiing each one to experience the different flavours they all have to offer.
Chamonix quite rightly holds it's place as one of the world's best ski areas, and definitely should be on everyone's "to ski at least once in my life" lists
This is but a brief introduction, please see our Chamonix ski resort guide for more information.
